Yes, South Africans need a visa to visit the United States. There are no shortcuts, no visa-on-arrival options, and no electronic travel authorisation equivalent for South African passport holders. If you want to travel to the US, you need to apply for a visa well in advance.
Here is what you need to know.
No ESTA for South Africans
You may have heard of the ESTA (Electronic System for Travel Authorisation), which allows citizens of certain countries to visit the US for up to 90 days without a formal visa. It is quick, affordable, and done entirely online. Sounds ideal, right?
Unfortunately, it is not available to us. The ESTA is only open to passport holders from countries on the US Visa Waiver Programme, which includes most of Western Europe, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, and a handful of others. South Africa is not on the list, and there is no indication that this will change anytime soon.
If you have seen third-party websites offering to “process your ESTA” as a South African, close the tab. They cannot help you, and some of them will happily take your money anyway.
What Visa Do You Need?
For tourism, visiting family, or a business trip, you need a B1/B2 visitor visa. This is a non-immigrant visa that allows stays of up to six months at a time and is typically issued for ten years, meaning you can travel to the US multiple times on the same visa without reapplying each time.
That said, a ten-year visa does not mean you can stay for ten years. The duration of each individual stay is determined by the immigration officer at the port of entry, and it is usually 90 days. Always check the stamp in your passport when you arrive.
The Application Process

Applying for a B1/B2 visa involves several steps:
- Complete the online DS-160 application form at ceac.state.gov
- Pay the non-refundable application fee (currently around $185)
- Schedule a visa interview at the US Embassy or Consulate
- Attend the interview in person
- Provide supporting documentation
You will need to show strong ties to South Africa, proof that you intend to return home, and evidence that you can fund your trip. The consular officer wants to be confident you are not planning to overstay.
There are US consular offices in Johannesburg, Cape Town, and Durban, so you do not necessarily have to travel far for your interview.
Allow Plenty of Time
This is where many travellers come unstuck. Appointment wait times at US consular offices can vary significantly, and in 2026 South Africans are facing increased scrutiny as part of broader tightening of US visa vetting. Processing times can stretch to several weeks or longer, and this does not include the time it takes for your passport to be returned to you after approval.
The general rule: start your application at least three to six months before you plan to travel, and do not book non-refundable flights until you have your visa in hand.
Cruisers, Take Note
If you are planning a cruise that calls at a US port, whether you are starting or ending your voyage there or simply stopping in as part of an itinerary, you will need a valid US visa. This applies even if you only plan to be in port for a day.
Popular cruise embarkation points like Miami, Fort Lauderdale, New York, and Los Angeles all fall under US immigration jurisdiction. Even a repositioning cruise that touches a US port on the way somewhere else requires that you have your visa sorted beforehand. Do not assume that being aboard a ship exempts you from the rules. It does not.
If your cruise itinerary includes a US stop, factor in the visa application well ahead of time. Your travel consultant can advise on the timing and what documentation you will need.

In Short
- South Africans need a B1/B2 visa to visit the USA
- No ESTA, no visa on arrival
- Apply at least three to six months before you travel
- Cruise passengers visiting US ports need a visa too
- Book your consular interview as early as possible and do not commit to non-refundable travel until you have your visa
The USA is absolutely worth the extra admin. Just give yourself enough runway to get it sorted without the stress.
